Seizure means the repeated local welding and breaking away of two sliding due to lack of lubrication in the art. The result is usually a failure of the system.

Predators appear to high tribological stress members when the emergency running properties are insufficient, and no lubricant film is present between the sliding members, so there is no hydrodynamic lubrication more. The progressive progressive mixed friction heats the components locally increasing, both processes influence each other. The sliding weld from one dependent on the bearing material temperature and separated on the basis of the ongoing movement from one another again. This material particles remain on each component partners. The process of welding and separating can stop when steady operating conditions are present ( speed, load, temperature, pressure ) and the surfaces allow a stable operation, there is a risk that the process starts again with changing operating conditions. In general, the seizure lasts until the force acting on the moving component energy is no longer sufficient to overcome the extra friction on the seizure marks or solve the welded parts. Second is the case if, for example, in piston engines gas to the seizure areas from the working chamber into the crankcase passes ( blow-by ). However, it is also possible that the seizing caused a further loss, which then causes the failure of the system.

Eaters are most frequently reciprocating engines on the sliding surfaces, piston and cylinder ( piston seizure ). Also very often eat rotating shafts in bearings.
