Friedrich Lux

Friedrich Lux (* November 24, 1820 in Ruhla, † July 9, 1895 in Mainz ) was a German composer, organist and conductor.

Career

Friedrich Lux's father, Georg Heinrich Lux (1779-1861), was a composer and organist. He gave his son first music lessons, teacher later Frederick was Friedrich Schneider at Dessau.

At Dessau Court Theater Friedrich Lux received in 1841 the post of music director. In the Mainz Municipal Theatre, he worked from 1851 as Kapellmeister. In 1864, Friedrich Lux was music director and conductor of the Mainz Liedertafel.

As a choral conductor in Mainz, he performed works like Paul, Messiah and Bach's St. Matthew Passion. During his lifetime, was Lux as one of the most important organ virtuosos in the southwest of Germany.

Works

The romantic opera The Blacksmith of Ruhla wrote Friedrich Lux in Mainz, where it was premiered in 1882. With great success was followed by other performances on more than 30 platforms, including Strasbourg, Chemnitz and Basle.

Other major works are the comic opera The Princess of Athens ( UA Mainz 1896) and by night to the light, a symphony on Protestant hymns. In addition, Friedrich Lux wrote a Missa brevis, hard overtures, numerous organ pieces, three string quartets and a piano trio. After his death came Lux's music gradually forgotten, but took until the middle of the 20th century still quite prominent advocates. Above all, the music researcher Wilhelm Altmann made ​​himself strong for the composer and praised in particular its chamber music.
