Friedrich Wilhelm Franz Nippold

Frederick William Franz Nippold ( born September 15, 1838 in Emmerich; † August 3, 1918 in Oberursel ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Life

Nippold came from a Protestant-Catholic intermarriage and grew up in the diaspora situation of the Rhenish Protestantism. After studying in Halle, Bonn, Amsterdam and Leiden 1860-1863 he made a trip to the Orient. Habilitated in 1865 in Heidelberg, he was appointed associate there in 1867, 1871 in Bern to full professor of theology. In 1884 he became successor to Karl von Hase's kirchengeschichtlichem chair in Jena where he taught until his retirement in 1907. During the winter semester 1903/ 04 he served as rector.

The international law Otfried Nippold (1864-1938) was his son.

Work and significance

After early work on the Dutch Reformation history Nippold later employed almost exclusively with the church history of his own century. He took his life on current church political issues. His main work, the third edition of the Handbook of the latest church history is highly subjective in its judgments, but has contemporary historical source value. Nippold saw himself as a student of Richard Rothe, whose first biography he wrote and his liberal position he continued as a member of the German Protestant Association. As a National Liberal he fought in particular ultramontanism within the Roman Catholic Church. To this end, he promoted the Old Catholicism and successfully lobbied for the establishment of the Christian Catholic Faculty in Berne. In 1886 he was among the founders of the Evangelical Alliance to safeguard the German - Protestant interests and was until 1906 a member of the Central Committee and one of the most prolific speakers and writers. He was a confidant of the Grand Duke Carl Alexander (Sachsen -Weimar -Eisenach ) and the Prussian prince and future Emperor Friedrich III.
