Friendship Games

Under the name of friendship competitions (Russian " Дружба -84 " ) contributed 1984, the countries of the socialist camp, a number of international sports competitions as a propaganda counter-event to the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. These had been boycotted by 14 Eastern Bloc countries.

The competitions included all Olympic sports as well as some other disciplines such as tennis, table tennis and Sambo. They took place in nine different countries (USSR, Bulgaria, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Cuba, North Korea, Mongolia and East Germany ) from July to September 1984. In the GDR, competitions were held in canoeing, road cycling and handball.

The absolute results exceeded partly those of the simultaneously held the Olympic Games. However, the target of the socialist sports lines flood of world records was made ​​at least in the core Olympic disciplines. 30 world records alone, however, were placed in weightlifting.
