Friesach

Friesach is a town with 5085 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the north of Carinthia. It is the oldest town in Carinthia and for their still well-preserved medieval buildings, such as the city walls, and the water leading moat known.

Geography

Geographical location

The city is located at the output of Metnitztals on the Friesacher field, at the foot of virgiliano and the Peter Berg. The foothills of the Alps Gurktaler provide the basis for the fortifications in the West.

In the village there is the Count Olsamündung.

History

Silver and iron finds from La Tène and Roman periods in what is now the municipality indicate that the area, which occupies the city today, which was already settled early. The Roman Empire Via Iulia Augusta ran through the present town: It proceeded from Zwischenwässern up to Wildbad Einoed roughly along the present route of the B 317

From the settlement of the region in the late 6th century by the Slavs evidenced by numerous local and river names; also Friesach is derived from the Slavic Pretzel ( place at the Birch ). The subjugation of the Carantanians Slavs to 740 followed by a settlement by Bavarians, who reached in particular on the Neumarkt saddle to Carinthia. In and around Friesach a number of economic courts arose. In 860 Louis the German appropriated over several goods to the archbishop of Salzburg Adalwin, among other things, the court ad Friesah (before Friesach ), which is the oldest written mention of the village.

Located on one of the main trade routes between Vienna and Venice in the Middle Ages, the market quickly rose to become an important commercial center. The place was a major storehouse in Italy traffic. The market in 1215 was raised to town. His heyday Friesach under Archbishop Eberhard II (1200-1246) and became the second largest city in the archbishopric of Salzburg and the most important city in Carinthia. The archbishops impressed the first time in 1130 the Friesacher penny, the nationwide cash remained for over two centuries until after Eastern Hungary. Ever since Friesach was constituted as a municipality in 1850, it has been modified several times in its scope. From the original municipal area cadastral Töschelsdorf (1873 ) and Zeltschach (1890 ) and Michel village split (1892 ) from.
