Friesenplatz (KVB)

Metro Station Fries Place is a station of lines 3, 4, 5, 12 and 15 of the Cologne Stadtbahn. It is a railway junction between two subway tunnels: the extension of the downtown tunnel direction Ehrenfeld and the ring tunnel that leads to the center of Cologne.

Location

The metro station is located under the same frieze course, which actually consists of two courses: one in the West at Venloerstraße and on the east by the frieze road. Between the two places is the Hohenzollern ring.

Besides today, eastern Metro Station access to the ring road, at the height of Friesenwall and the frieze road was located by the year 1882, the Friesentor. It was one of the castle gates in the medieval walled city of Cologne, which opened on the Roman road to Venlo the path to the northwest. Under this road now operate the subway lines 3 and 4 to Bocklemünd / Mengenich.

History

The station, with its underground tunnels was created in two phases (1985 and 1987) and opened. Previously, the now underground traffic routes have been operated as tram lines. 1985, initially the extension of the downtown tunnel from the reversing triangle Appellhofplatz direction Neu-Ehrenfeld was opened with the lines 3, 4 and 5. The range of line 5 from Friesenplatz about Appellhofplatz ( armory ) to Dom / Hbf, which was built in 1968, is the oldest tunnel section of Cologne.

In 1987, the cross tunnels were then taken under the rings towards Rudolf Place and Ebert place in operation, in which 12 and 15, on lines today. Two years later (1989 ) opened the tunnel towards Ehrenfeld and station entrances remodeled ground floor, with glass and steel were used instead of the usual Betonumfassungen.

Architecture

The metro station is designed as a tower station at which intersect two subway lines.

As the highest underground floor a distribution level is created. There are information points, public toilets, kiosks, floor cafes, shops, public telephones and both escalators and fixed stairs to all four platforms. As a second underground floor of the platforms of the extension of the downtown tunnel direction Neu-Ehrenfeld are created. She currently consist of 2/3 of high-floor platforms. There, on lines 3, 4 and 5, the platforms of the ring tunnel are created as third underground floor.
