Frostastaðavatn

The Frostastaðavatn is a lake in the highlands of Iceland. It is located in the municipality of Rangárþing Ytra.

Location

It is located about 5 km north of Landmannalaugar and not far from the volcano Hekla. At the same time it is in the high meadows area Landmannaafréttur.

Volcanism

The area around the lake is evidence of active volcanism. Two lava fields, the Námshraun, a lava field from rhyolite with a large lava fall and the Norðurnámshraun rich in the south to at or in the lake. They both come from an explosive volcanic eruption in the system of Veiðivötn to which the lake belongs in 1480. More lava fields in the surroundings of the lake are the Domadalshraun in the west and the Frostastaðahraun in the north.

The lake offers depending on the weather by the striking green or blue color of its waters.

Upland slopes

Two highland slopes, the Fjallabaksleid nyrðri (F 208) and the Landmannaleið ( Dómadalsleið, F225 ) to meet on its banks.

In addition, results from the lake from a hard drive- slope to the crater Ljótipollur, which belongs to the Veiðivötn.

Folk Tales

Tell emphasized as well as the name indicate earlier settlement on its banks. The name is derived from isl. Staður ( city, settlement ) and isl. = frost frost, cold, so the German lake of cold place. There is a yard to have found called Frostastaðir.

In the folk tale that speaks of the farm, tells you enchanted by the consumption of hairy fish from the lake, is said to have cost the lives of the residents of the once located there court. Another legend tells of a girl who was a man who had disdained to eat a hairy trout. Meanwhile fish are caught and sold in Landmannalaugar in the lake again. Insofar as we know, were not hairy among them.
