Fruela I of Asturias

Fruela I († 768 in Cangas de Onís ) was 757-768 King of Asturias. He was the son and successor of Alfonso I. His mother was a daughter of Empire Ermesinda founder Pelayo.

In the battle of Pontuvio ( Pontedeume ) Fruela I suggested a Moorish army. In depopulated Galicia he performed repopulation measures. He threw down a rebellion of the Basques; among the prisoners was a native of Álava young woman named Munia, who married Fruela. Deep into Moorish territory in the area of ​​Valencia and Murcia, he led plundering. He also founded the city of Oviedo.

The Asturian sources ( Chronicle of Alfonso III. , Chronicon Albeldense ) Fruela I describe as wild and violent and report that he killed his brother Vimara hand. According to the Chronicon Albeldense he suspected Vimara to strive for the kingship. Finally Fruela was murdered by his courtiers in the former Asturian capital of Cangas de Onís.

Fruela left a minor son, the future King Alfonso II was succeeded by his cousin Aurelio.
