FS Class E.632

The E.632 series is an Italian electric locomotive series.

History

In the 1980s, the Italian State Railways needed new freight locomotives. These should have a top speed of 130 km / h and can haul 800 tons in the plane. With a slope of 15 per thousand, the locomotive should still be able to reach a speed of 100 km / hr. These requirements could meet the E.633 series. The cabs were equipped with the latest technology. During the development of the E.633 showed that offered the construction of a passenger variant ( especially for heavy -pull trains, with frequent stops ) - so the E.632 arose. The E.632 and E.633 series differ only in the different gear ratio. Therefore, the E.633 greater pulling power, but the maximum speed is limited to 130 km / h. Were built five Vorserienloks, 66 E.632 and E.633 147. The last production run of the E.633 ( 201-240 ) has a number of improvements and new features, among other things, it is equipped with multiple unit control. From the series E.632/633 the E.652 series showed the ( externally almost identical) represents an improved and more powerful version of these locomotives. With a continuous output of 5,000 kilowatts it reaches 160 km / h, but has the same tensile force of the E.633 and can be used with the series E.633.200 in multiple unit control. 176 were built. All locomotives ( with the exception of the Vorserienloks E.632/633 ) are equipped with push-pull train.

Use

The E.632 came from the beginning in the metropolitan areas of Milan and Turin in regional traffic from serious -pull trains for use, and operate there today. The E.633 were (and are ) in freight transport, but partly also as the E.632 used in regional traffic. Today the E.632 only run in regional transport, the use of E.633 is limited to a few exceptions ( for example, on the route from Messina to Catania), and the E.652 fully to freight transport. The Vorserienloks are retired today, except for a few accidental losses all production locomotives are still in use.
