Funningur

Funningur [ fʊn ɪŋgʊɹ ː ] (Danish: Funding) is one of the oldest villages on the Faroe Islands and is located on the northwest coast Eysturoys.

Funningur is located on the long fjord Funningsfjørður, at the end of the same place Funningsfjørður is ( but is located on the eastern side of the fjord and thus before 2009 belonged to the commune Runavíkar ).

Grímur Kamban - - According to the Faroese here the first settlers on the Faroe Islands is said to have settled around the year 825. The name is derived from the Old Norse Funningur funding, what discovery means.

In the village is a typical Faroese wooden church from 1847.

Geology

The region around Funningur is characteristic of the middle and upper level of the basalt. Only the valley in which the village is located is not completely rocky and therefore the only suitable place for settlement on this page. Two of the highest mountains of the Faroe Islands lie close Funningur. The Slættaratindur is just west of the village, the Gráfelli located in the north-west. A third summit - the Svartbakstindur, who is also over 800 meters high, is located south of the village.
