One of the first messages from Furnas speaks of logging operations after the destruction of many homes in the earthquake of October 1522 and 22 landslides in Vila Franca do Campo. Captain Rui Gonçalves also left many trees to rebuild the parish church of cases. 1553 adopted Captain D. Manuel da Câmara a provision for reforestation after the area was almost deforested; his son Rui Gonçalves further developed the area and let broaden the way, which allowed 1577 grazing after year.

During the reign of Don Manuel da Camara, the governor of the island of São Miguel, in 1613 a chapel was built in honor of Our Blessed woman of Consolation and a small residence for the priest, who was responsible for the service and for the daily lighting of a lamp in the sacristy. 1615 saw the first houses, and a small monastery was built near the chapel. Until 1630 the area after the volcanic eruption was deserted, then new settlers came to the valley of Furnas (mostly from Ponta Garça, Povoaçao, Vila Franca do Campo and Maia ), when the country was fertile again. New roads were built 1682/1683 on behalf of Baron Larangeiras.

In 1832, an unknown English settlers bought a large plot of land to Furnas to build on the crater lake Lagoa das a house, but sold it soon to the Consul General in Ponta Delgada, called Viñas, in 1855. Mr. Viñas built a summer house with garden, he named in honor of family ties his wife Grenå.
