Futaleufú Department

The department Futaleufu is located in the northwest of the province of Chubut in southern Argentina and is one of 15 administrative units in the province.

It is bordered to the north by the Departamento Cushamen, east and south by the Departamento Languiñeo and to the west by Chile.

The capital of the department Futaleufu is Esquel.

The name of the department comes from the Rio Futaleufu, which rises in the National Park Los Alerces and flows through Chile in the Pacific Ocean.

Population

According to estimates by the INDEC, the population increased from 37 540 inhabitants (2001) to 40 813 inhabitants in 2005.
