Gabbeh

A Gabbeh (Persian گبه ) (Kurdish, lurisch: gava Bakhtiari: khersak ) is a traditional hand-knotted Persian rug coarse weave. Characteristic of him is the use of abstract designs, usually large areas of color and a playful approach to geometric figures.

Probably originating from Lorestan carpets are manufactured by tribes such as Qashqai, Lurs, Bakhtiari, Kohkīlūyeh va Boyer Ahmadi, Mamassani, Khamseh, Afshar and nomadic Arabs in the southwestern province of Fars.

The material mainly sheep and goat's wool, which is dyed using only natural dyes. Characteristic is a most expressive, vibrant color choice. The tie yarns are twisted together of two strong threads and processes both with the Persian Sehna node as the Turkish ( Ghiordes ) node. The Knot density is in this case usually less than 70,000 per square meter. So overall result is a quite coarsely woven, soft carpet with a high utility value.

A Gabbeh originally served exclusively to the household. He was (usually a woman ) is provided for a single person. Since the 1980s, took the west, the interest in this type carpet enormously and developed in the 1990s to a veritable boom. Other producing countries are now India, Afghanistan, China and Turkey.
