Gábor Darvas

Gábor Darvas [ ga ː bor dɒrvɒʃ ] ( born January 18, 1911 in Szatmárnémeti ( Transylvania), today Satu Mare (Romania); † 18 February 1985 in Budapest) was a Hungarian composer and musicologist.

Life

Gábor Darvas ( until 1952 Gábor Steinberger ) was born 1911 in Szatmárnémeti ( Transylvania). He retired in 1918 with his family to Budapest, where he attended the High School and the Academy of Music. From the age of nine he learned on piano, 1926-1932, he studied at the Budapest Franz Liszt Academy of Music first bassoon, then composition as a student of Zoltán Kodály.

In the thirties, one led his orchestral compositions in concerts and in the Hungarian Radio. In 1939 he left Hungary and lived during the Second World War in Chile. He was for a time close associate of Erich Kleiber. Later, he wrote articles for music magazines.

In 1948 he returned to Hungary and worked until 1972 as a musical consultant in various cultural institutions, including the Hungarian radio and the record company Hungaroton.

With his composing activity began in 1951 again. He also dealt with the development and publishing, editing, and instrumentation of musical treasures of European music history as well as the writing of several books.
