Gabriel Báthory

Gabriel Báthory (* 1589, † October 27, 1613 ) was a Transylvanian prince out of the house Báthory and reigned from 1608 to 1613.

After 1606 with the Peace of Zsitvatorok the war between the Habsburgs and the Turks came to an end, Prince Stephen Botchkay died suddenly and Sigismund Rákóczi I could not hold Gabriel Báthory came to power.

He took advantage of the power vacuum and so built his own power from. Known for his hostility against the Saxons he occupied in 1610 Sibiu and let it rob. The Kronstadt City Judge Michael White, however, managed to organize resistance, so that the troops of the prince were defeated at the battle of Marienburg on October 16 in 1612. In this battle alongside Michael White and 39 students of the Kronstadt Honterus school died.

1613 elected him to the state parliament in White Castle (now Alba Iulia ) from Gabriel Bethlen and certain as the new Prince of Transylvania, which he was to 1629. Gabriel Báthory was killed shortly after being voted out by members of his bodyguard.
