Gabriele Falloppio

Gabriele Falloppio (also Fallopio; * 1523 in Modena, † October 9, 1562 in Padua ) was an Italian anatomist and surgeon. Better known by his Latin name he is Fallopius. He is regarded as the founders of modern anatomy and was one of the most important physicians of the 16th century.

Life

Falloppio studied in Ferrara, where he received his doctorate in 1552. From 1548 to 1551 he was professor of anatomy at Pisa, after which he taught surgery and pharmacy in Padua. With numerous himself conducted the sections he contributed to the explosion of the anatomical knowledge in the 16th century. Particularly detailed descriptions he contributed to the construction of the organ of hearing. He also set new accents in the description of the oviduct, which is therefore also called Fallopp'sche tube or fallopian tube ( Fallopii ) - in the English language: Fallopian tube - is called.

As the first scientifically reliable mention of the often shamefully concealed syphilis applies his book De morbo Gallico ( " About the French disease ").
