Gabriele Mucchi

Gabriele Mucchi ( born June 25, 1899 in Turin, † 10 May 2002 Milan ) was an Italian painter, printmaker and architect. He is considered the founder of the " New Realism " ( New Realism ).

Life

After high school, graduated from Gabriele Mucchi 1916-1923 studies for a civil engineer and architect at the University of Bologna, which was interrupted by military service 1917/18. After graduating, he worked in a construction company in Rome, from 1927 in an architectural office in Milan. A stay in Berlin in the years 1928 to 1930 was followed by a lengthy stay in Paris from 1931 until 1934. During the following years, his name was known by impressive murals on the borders of Italy. His studio became a meeting place for the anti-fascist group Corrente.

After the Second World War, in which he had first fought as a soldier and later as a partisan, he co-founded the magazine Realismo.

Mucchi lived after the Second World War a long time in the GDR. From 1956 to 1961 he worked as a professor at the Art Academy Berlin- Weissensee, 1961-1963 at the Caspar- David -Friedrich- Institute of the University of Greifswald. After that, he lived in Milan and Berlin.

Gabriele Mucchi was married to the sculptor Jenny Mucchi - Wiegmann since 1933.

The tomb of the couple is at the Central Cemetery in Berlin -Friedrich field.
