Geography

Geographical location

Gaiberg is situated in 200-445 meters altitude on the edge of the Odenwald and Kraichgau in the Neckartal -Odenwald, about ten kilometers south of Heidelberg. The place is an original street village on a sloping hillside to the southeast.

Neighboring communities

Gaiberg bordered to the east by Bammental, to the south by the Leimener districts Gauangelloch and Lingental and the west and north of Heidelberg.

Historical Geography

In the municipality Gaibergs are the waste places Waldolfeshusen and dated in a forged document from the 12th century to the year 1016 Outbound village Gowenkirchen that is not likely, however, lies in Gaiberg.

History

Gaiberg probably originated in the Middle Ages as a clearing settlement of Gauangelloch and was first mentioned in 1312 as Gauberg. The place originally belonged to the Bishopric of Worms and was purchased in 1419 by the Electoral Palatinate. There Gaiberg belonged to Meckenheimer center and from the 15th century to the villages own the winery Dilsberg. The land was mainly owned by the residents. 1803 came Gaiberg to Baden and the Office Neckargemuend was assumed with the 1857 it came to the district office Eberbach, in 1863 in the District Office of Heidelberg, the Heidelberg district later, came up. 1967 Gaiberg was nationally recognized resort. With resolution of the district of Heidelberg in 1973 Gaiberg came to the Rhein- Neckar-Kreis.

The place was marked purely agricultural until the recent past, in particular forestry, with heavy use of the forest for cattle pasture and forest chopping operation approached very important. The laborers of the village found mostly in the forestry of the Heidelberg city forest to make a living. Also was from the mid-19th century until the First World War, the cultivation of cherries, raspberries later of an important source of income. The first industrial unit in Gaiberg settled until 1957 with an automotive rubber parts manufacturing company, which offered 200 jobs. 1968, more than half of the workforce commuting out of the town to the surrounding towns, the majority (261 of 385 commuters ) was there engaged in Heidelberg. In 2012 Gaiberg celebrates its 700th anniversary.

The council has 12 members who are elected every five years. In addition, the mayor comes as council chairman.

The mayor is directly elected for eight years. Since 1994, officiated Klaus Gärtner.

Coat of arms

The blazon of the arms is: Argent, on a green ground, a red stone pillar and a deciduous tree with black trunk.

The coat of arms dates back to a court seal from the year 1751st It already showed a column next to a tree. 1900, the coat of arms was adopted on a proposal from the State Archive of the community. The stone is still standing next to a lime tree in front of St. Peter's Protestant. The importance of the stone is unknown. Guesses ranging from an old grave up to the remains of a cross.

The flag is green and white and in 1956 awarded by the Ministry of Interior.

Gaiberg maintains partnership relations with La Canourgue in the department of Lozère, Languedoc- Roussillon, in southern France.

Culture and sights

Structures

The City Council of Gaiberg was built in 1857 as a school and is used as a town hall for a new school building in 1905.

The tower of the Evangelical Church Peter probably goes back to the 13th century. The church was in 1556 during the Protestant Reformation, but fell in the time of the Palatine church division temporarily re- Catholics to which they exchanged in 1707 against the Church in Dilsberg. 1737/38 the nave was renewed in 1850, the tower received a new belfry. In 1957, the church was extensively renovated.

The Catholic St. Michael's Church was built in 1955/56, instead of an older chapel. Your choir tower was externally adjusted to the Protestant Church. The church was extensively renovated in 2007.

The community is connected via country roads and the eight kilometers to junction Heidelberg / Schwetzingen the A5 to the national road network.

Gaiberg also has a connectivity of public transport. Bus lines of the BRN lead after gluing, Heidelberg and Schatthausen and after Bammental and meadow brook. Gaiberg belongs to the tariff zone of the transport association Rhein- Neckar.

Education

In Gaiberg there is a primary school. Secondary schools are located in glues, Heidelberg, Neckargemuend and Bammental. For the youngest population, there is a municipal kindergarten. The municipality operates a library.
