Gaius Sulpicius Paterculus

Gaius Sulpicius Paterculus was a Roman senator of the patrician family of Sulpicier and 258 BC consul.

Life

According to the testimony of the Fasti Capitolini both the father and the grandfather of Gaius Sulpicius Paterculus led the praenomen Quintus.

From the career of Sulpicius only his consulate is known that he held 258 BC, together with Aulus Atilius Caiatinus and fell into the time of the First Punic War. According to the historian Polybius Sulpicius fought like his counterpart in Sicily against Carthage. The Roman annalistic tradition reports, however, that Sulpicius was in Sardinia in use, many conquered enemy positions, and that its planned offensive against North Africa was prevented by contrary winds. He then won a naval victory against the Carthaginian general Hannibal Gisco, which was therefore killed by his own people. The Triumphalakten indicate that Sulpicius was able to celebrate a triumph after his return to Rome.
