Gajski-Kuhn chart

The Y - chart (also known as Gajski diagram) vividly describes the views of the hardware design, especially in the development of integrated circuits. Daniel D. Gajski developed in 1983 and Robert Kuhn, the design model. 1985 was refined by Robert Walker and Donald Thomas.

According to this model, the design of hardware is done in three different domains. The domains are represented as axes and form a Y. Along the axes span abstraction levels, which characterize the degree of abstraction of the specification. Outer layers generalize dar. interior layers are refinements.

In the hardware design is mostly a top-down design, are described down to the behavior, structure and geometry at lower levels of abstraction. The developer can choose one of the points of view and jumping back and forth between the perspectives on the model of the Y- chart. In general, the design process is set to no particular order in the Y- chart.

  • At system level, basic characteristics of an electronic system are defined. For behavioral description block diagrams are used. It is abstracted from signals and timing. Blocks in the structural domain, for example, CPU and memory.
  • The algorithmic level is determined by descriptions of concurrent algorithms (signals, loops, variables, assignments ). In the structural domain, for example, memory cells and ALUs are essential elements.
  • The register-transfer level is a level of abstraction at which the behavior is described by communicating registers and logic units. Note that the data structures and data flows are defined. In view of the geometric design of the floorplanning step is located at this hierarchy level.
  • The logic level is described in the behavior view of Boolean equations. In view of the structure corresponding to the view of gates and flip-flops. In the geometry of the domain -level logic is described, for example, by standard cells.
  • The behavior at circuit level is mathematically described, for example, by differential equations. Correspondences in the structural domain, transistors and capacitors to crystal lattices. In view of the geometrical forms and layouts are the circuit level.
