Galactitol or galactitol ( dulcitol more synonyms, dulcitol ) is - as a sugar alcohol of galactose - a harmful breakdown product, which is increasingly formed by the aldose reductase in congenital galactosemia, a galactose degradation disorder, by reduction of the aldehyde group. It is also found in some plants. Galactitol or galactitol can be detected in urine, a test that is used for the diagnosis and monitoring of galactosemia.
