Galea (helmet)

Galea and Cassis were the Latin names for the costs borne by Roman soldiers helmets. While a Cassis was always made ​​of metal, the Galea was originally a leather hood. Later, already in the Republican period, helmets have been using this expression but also indicated that consisted of aes ( "bronze", usually a brass alloy) or of iron. Leather helmets were henceforth no longer be borne, and are not known from the archaeological find material.
