Galician Literature Day

The Day of the Galician Literature ( Día das Letras Galegas, Día de las Letras gallegas ) is a secular holiday in Galicia. The Real Academia Galega led him in 1963 to celebrate the Galician language and literature. Since 1991 is May 17 public holiday in all of Galicia. The first celebration in 1963 reminded the publication of Cantares Galegos 100 years before; whose author Rosalía de Castro (1837-1885) had become one of the most important poets in the history of Galicia.

Since then, every day of Galician literature is devoted to a different author of the Galician language, is no longer alive. He is also celebrated in the countries in which many Galicians in the 19th and 20th centuries emigrated - especially in Argentina, Cuba, Brazil and Uruguay.
