Galle (Martian crater)

2300

The crater Galle is an impact crater on Mars. He was officially named in 1973 by the International Astronomical Union after the astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle.

Properties

Bile has a diameter of approximately 230 miles. It is located at 31 ° W ( 329 ° E ) and 51 ° S - on the eastern edge of the crater far greater Argyre Planitia.

The colloquial name Happy Face goes back to its appearance: the formation inside the crater reminds along with his Wall of a smiley face.

Reception

Since the smiley is a key motif in Alan Moore's graphic novel Watchmen, the crater was chosen as a Handlungsort. According to the artist Dave Gibbons, the similarity was to be with a smiley too good to be true. The crater is also a place of action in the movie Watchmen - The Watchmen.
