Gallup (Navajo: Na'nízhoozhí ) is a city in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of New Mexico in McKinley County. Gallup has 20,209 inhabitants and an area of 34.6 km ². The city lies on the Puerco River. In Gallup is also the University of New Mexico - Gallup Campus.

History

When Spanish conquistadors ( conquerors ) in 1540 came to the region of the later Gallup, Indians lived here, among others of the tribes of the Navajo and Hopi.

1880 taught David L. Gallup, a paymaster of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, along the under construction transcontinental railway line up an office in which the worker could collect their reward. The following year, the result was what Gallup. The workers who were involved in the construction of the railway came, mainly from Europe, Asia and Mexico. Many of them stayed in the area and later worked in the coal industry.

In the early years of the town there were some uprisings of the Indian tribes, but they were defeated by those stationed at nearby Fort Wingate soldiers. Indian influences are, however, in the city and remained until today the composition of its population and form as a result of the development of tourism is now one aspect of the economic life of Gallup.

Attractions

In the region around Gallup numerous movies were filmed during the heyday of the American Western. The El Rancho Hotel on historic Route 66 at that time had numerous guest stars, including John Wayne, Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, Errol Flynn, Kirk Douglas, Gregory Peck, Humphrey Bogart and many others. Even the U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Ronald Reagan were at the El Rancho guest. Each room is named after a famous hotel guest. The hotel is on the list of U.S. national landmarks and is a listed building.

Traffic
