Gamaliel H. Barstow

Gamaliel Henry Barstow ( born July 20, 1784 in Sharon, Litchfield County, Connecticut, † March 30, 1865 in Nichols, New York) was an American physician, judges and politicians.

Private life

Gamaliel Barstow drew 1812 in the Tioga County in New York, where he worked on his father's farm. During this time he also worked as a teacher. He then studied medicine in Great Barrington (Massachusetts ), and finally practiced as a doctor. In addition, he was appointed in 1818 to the First Judge at the Tioga County Court, a position which he held until 1823. When he later settled in Nichols (New York), he worked as a doctor and went country economies activities after.

Political career

Barstow was 1815-1819 member of the New York State Assembly. Then he held 1819-1822 a Senate seat from New York. He was subsequently re-elected to the New York State Assembly, where he served 1823-1826. During this time he was elected Minister of Finance of New York and has held this office from 1825 to 1828 and again in 1838. He was also active as a supervisor in 1830 by Nichols. He was then selected for the Anti- Masonic Party in the 22th Congress, where he served from March 4, 1831 to March 3, 1833. Barstow ran unsuccessfully in 1836 as a Whig for the office of Lieutenant Governor of New York.

He died in 1865 in Nichols and was buried at the Ashbury Cemetery.
