Gamaliel

Gamaliel Rabban Gamaliel I., or the Elder ( Patriarch approx 9-50 ) ( רבן גמליאל הזקן ) was a Jewish patriarch, and the most important figure of Rabbinic Judaism in the mid- first century AD. He was a grandson of Hillel, Tannait, father of Simeon ben Gamaliel, a Pharisee rabbi, prince of the Sanhedrin and together with his son the most important representative of the Hillel School. Whether he has indeed enjoyed this post, is not certain. About him it is said in the Mishna ( Sota 9:15 ):

" With the death of Rabban Gamaliel of the Old reverence stopped before the law and died purity and abstinence. "

The Sayings of the Fathers deliver both statements of Gamaliel and his son Simeon or Simon. From the first chapter ( I, 16):

" Rabban Gamaliel said: Pick a teacher, stay away from dubious, and not accustom yourself to it, to tithe estimated. His son Simon said: All of my days I grew up among wise and have nothing better for the body than silence found. Not the research is the main thing, but the doing, and who talks a lot, brings forth sin. "

The following quote Gamaliel from the Sayings of the Fathers ( chapter 2, verse 2) chose Samson Raphael Hirsch as a motto for his educational efforts:

" Beautiful is the study of the Torah along with Derech Eretz ', ie secular employment and secular studies. "

According to Christian tradition he was a teacher of the Apostle Paul (see Acts. 22.3 ). He was in Jerusalem after the capture of Peter and some of the apostles to their lawyer and meant that they were not stoned (Acts 5.34 to 42 ).
