Gamelin (bishop)

Gamelin (* unknown, † 1271) was a Scottish bishop of St Andrews in the 13th century. He was Lord Chancellor of Scotland and Guardian of Scotland under Alexander III. and papal chaplain. He was appointed in 1255 during Lent bishop of St Andrews and confirmed it on July 1, 1255 from Pope Alexander IV, who overlooked his "lack of birth." Despite its strong connection to the king, Gamelin supported the party Alexander Comyn. He was banished from Scotland to 1256, about a year after the party of Comyns rival Alan Durward had usurped the regency itself. After the disempowerment Durwards he could return and held no later than 1270 for sure again in Scotland. He died in 1271 in " Inchmurdauch " ( Innse Muiredaich ).
