The Gan International Airport ( IATA: GAN, ICAO code: VRMG ) is the second largest airport in the Maldives.

Location and meaning

The Gan Airport is located in Addu Atoll Gan to Iceland, the southernmost point of the Maldives. The island is located just south of the equator.

The domestic flight from the capital Malé to Gan takes an hour and ten minutes.

The Gan International Airport is adjacent to the Malé the only international airport in the country. He was removed from the regional to the international airport to take account of the increasing tourist traffic accounting and to develop the southern part of the Maldives tourism.

The airport is used by the Maldivian Maldivian Airlines (formerly Iceland Aviation Services Ltd. ) And Trans Maldivian Airways flown on scheduled flights. The defunct Air equator had its head office in Gan.

History

1941 base of the British Royal Navy was established during the Second World War on Gan Iceland. On this base an airfield was built as a material were mainly pressed coral. During the war, a British tanker in the port was shelled by the German submarine U -183.

In 1957, the base was taken over by the Royal Air Force and known as RAF Gan. From there, several missile tests with the rocket Kookaburra have been performed. In the 1970s, the base was abandoned.

The runway of the former British base now served as a regional airport. Due to the increasing number of tourists was finally decided to expand to the international airport to airport. Took place in 2007 and the opening of the first international flight. The Condor was the first airline that offered a direct flight to Gan from Germany.
