Gangpur

Gangpur was a princely state of British India in what is now the state of Odisha. Its capital was the site of Sundargarh.

By the time the Marathenkriege Gangpur was under the jurisdiction of Sambalpur, 1803 was ceded to the British, in 1818 returned to the Marathas and finally in 1826 came under British suzerainty. 1827-1947 Gangpur was an independent British protectorate. It was subordinate to 1905 the province of Bengal, then Orissa ( Odisha ), and had in 1892 an area of ​​6454 km ² and 108,000 inhabitants.

The last Raja Bir Udit Pratap Shekhar Deo ( 1938-56 ), joined in August 1947, the Eastern States Union. On 1 January 1948 this union was dissolved and was Gangpur Orissa India and thus incorporated. On November 1, 1956 all princely states were resolved. The Raja went for the Ganatantra Parishad in politics and was a minister in the 1959-1961 government of Orissa.
