Gangwon (historical province)

The Gangwon Gangwon- do Province and was one of the eight provinces of Korea during the Joseon Dynasty. The province was created in 1395, and received its name from the name of the largest cities in Gangneung and the provincial capital Wonju.

In 1895, Gangwon -do Chuncheon by districts ( Kor. 춘천 부 ,春川 府, Chuncheon - bu) in the west and Gangneung ( 강릉 부 ,江陵 府, Gangneung - bu) replaced. ( Wonju became part of Chungju District. )

1986 Korea was again divided into 13 provinces, and the two districts were combined to form the province of Gangwon -do again. Although Wonju was re- assigned to the Gangwon -do, were moved to the capital to Chuncheon.

With the division of Korea in 1945, in 1948 following the establishment of separate governments in North and South Korea and the end of the Korean War, there came again for sharing Ganwon - dos in two separate Provinces: Gangwon -do in South Korea and Kangwŏn -do in North Korea.
