Gao Region

Gao is an administrative region of Mali with about 544 120 inhabitants. Its capital is the same Gao.

The Gao Region is located in eastern Mali, adjacent to the Niger, and is divided into four districts ( cercles ) Ansongo, Bourem, Gao and Ménaka. The Niger River flows through the region.

Ethnic groups in the region include the Songhai, Bozo, Tuareg, Bambara, and Kounta. The city of Gao was the center of the kingdom of Gao and Songhai eich.
