Gaoligong pika

Ochotona gaoligongensis is a mammal of the family of pikas among lagomorphs. Its distribution area is probably limited to the Gaoligong Shan in the northwest, southwest China's Yunnan Province, also are suspected occurrence in neighboring Myanmar.

Features

Ochotona gaoligongensis reaches a body length of 16.5 to 17.0 inches and resembles Ochotona forresti both its body size as well as the essential features of the skull. Differences for this lie in shiny reddish- brown fur with reddish- black neck. The skull is also in profile somewhat flattened with longer nose leg bones, and still has more differences in the morphology.

Dissemination

The distribution area of Ochotona gaoligongensis is probably limited to the Gaoligong Shan in the northwest, southwest China's Yunnan Province, but it could also occur in neighboring Myanmar.

The habitat of Ochotona gaoligongensis is characterized by rocks and debris in wooded areas at an altitude of 2,950 meters. He lives in this habitat sympatric with Ochotona forresti and Ochotona thibetana.

Ochotona gaoligongensis was assigned in 1988 as an independent species the pikas ( genus Ochotona ). It is believed that it is either a sister species or a synonym Ochotona forresti.

Threats and conservation

The species is not classified as a hazard category of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources ( IUCN) due to insufficient data on population size and distribution. The species is known only by catches of locals. In China it is considered endangered as soon as sufficient data are available, this will also apply to the IUCN.
