Garabogazköl

The Kara- Bogaz - Gol ( Turkmen: Garabogazköl, Russian Кара - Богаз - Гол ), also Karabugas golf, is a flat, expansive lagoon on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea in Turkmenistan. The water has a depth of 4-7 m and has, due to strong evaporation, an extremely high salt content of up to 34%. The water area is about 18,400 km ².

The Gulf is separated from the north and south by two narrow sandy headlands, between which is a narrow channel. Here formerly flowed the sea water with great speed into the Gulf. 1980, a dam was built to stop the further decline in the Caspian Sea after decades of lowering the water level in this estuary. At that time it was not known that the water level since 1978, increased again and the measure was therefore unnecessary.

After the dam was built, it came to a complete drying of the lagoon and for conversion into a dangerous environment for the salt desert. In addition, the degradation of the Glauber's salt deposits was no longer possible. As the installation of locks in the years 1985-1991 was not sufficient to improve the situation significantly, the dam was removed again in 1992. The rise of the Caspian Sea will ensure that the lagoon fills up again with seawater.

The Kara- Bogaz - Gol also has economic significance. In the lagoon are the largest Glauber's salt deposits in the world, also saline, magnesium and boron and potassium salts, which are further processed to a large extent by the chemical industry.

Due to the high salinity of the lake, according to researchers at the University of Heidelberg would be an ideal location for an osmotic power plant. Such could achieve an output of about 5 gigawatts.
