Garbahaareey

Garbahaarrey (also Garbahaarreey, Garbaharey or Garba Harre written ) is a town in southern Somalia and the capital of Gedo region.

Geography

Garbahaarrey is close to the borders with Kenya and Ethiopia, west of the Jubba River.

Population

The approximately 12,000 residents mainly belong to the Marehan Subclan the Darod, which included the former Somali president and dictator Siad Barre.

Barre himself claimed to have been born in 1919 in Garbahaarrey. Other claims that he is, however, born in Shilabo in the Ethiopian Ogaden and was later Garbahaarrey on to obtain a post in the colonial administration of Italian Somaliland. After his death in 1995 he was buried here.
