Garcorops jadis

Garcorops jadis is a probably extinct species of spiders of the family of Selenopidae. The species is known only from a single, enclosed in Copal, copy up today, which was found on the beach of Sambava on the northeast coast of Madagascar. Due to various morphological characteristics, the species was classified into four types scoring extant genus Garcorops. Another find, described as? Anyphops cortex, this type has been assigned as a synonym.

Features

Garcorops jadis has a body length of 6.5 mm, the prosoma has a length of 3.0 millimeters and a width of 2.8 millimeters. The prosoma and the abdomen ( opisthosoma ) are yellow - brown with some darker spots and a hair that is on the Prosdoma of white and on the abdomen of dark hair with light tips. The legs are of the same color as the body and marked by weak dark bands.

In particular, the construction and positioning of the eye resulted in a classification of the type classified in the genus Garcorops jadis Garcorops. Compared with the recent species of the genus it resembles especially the endemic species in Madagascar madagascar Garcorops. Both types have the pedipalps a well-developed dorsal Scopula on the cymbium with long embolus to the Palpenorgan ( bulb ). However, the Retrolateral, ie laterally ansitz end at the rear, apophysis of the tibia is more acute than in G. madagascar at Garcorops jadis.

Taxonomy and systematics

Garcorops jadis is not yet trapped by only one, in hardened tree resin ( copal ) specimen, the holotype is known. This is an adult male animal in a very good condition. The clear Copal resin of Hymenaea verrucosa from the measures 70 x 20 x 12 mm and contains in addition to the numerous spider Fly, a cockroach, a mite and another juvenile, Spiders. He is currently in the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren, Belgium.

G. jadis was first described by Jan Bosselaers in March 2004 in the journal Zootaxa scientifically. The naming jadis was selected by Bosselaers as a reference to the white witch Jadis from the children's book The King of Narnia by Irish writer CS Lewis in 1950., Justified by the excellent quality and preservation of the holotype, the frozen for him as " trapped in ice, in time forever " ( " enclosed in ice, frozen in time forever " ) appeared. In September 2004, the Paläoarachnologe Jörg Wunderlich published a description of the nature? Anyphops cortex, which he systematically could not place. After comparing the two holotypes of? Anyphops cortex and Garcorops jadis both types of David Penney, Hirotsugu Ono and Paul A. Selden were recognized as belonging to the genus Garcorops. Since Garcorops jadis been described before? Anyphops cortex was designated as a synonym latter.

Status

Based on the only known copy of the resin encapsulated type no chronology and no statement about the status of the species is possible. It is possible that there is a tart still living species, which has not yet been discovered and described, maybe it is, however, an already extinct Article
