Paris Gare de l' Est ( Paris East Station German ) is one of the six large terminus stations of Paris. It is located in the 10th arrondissement, not far from the Gare du Nord ( Paris North Station dt ). With 34 million passengers per year ( 93,000 per day), it is the fifth-largest train station in Paris.

History

The Gare de l' Est in 1849 by the Compagnie du chemin de fer de Paris à Strasbourg under the name Embarcardère de Strasbourg (one borrowed from the fledgling railroad from the seafaring term that actually means boarding, boat dock, that is, mutatis mutandis, the departure point to Strasbourg ) opened. After the first of a series of enlargements, which was necessitated by the opening of a new line to Mulhouse in Upper Alsace by the renamed Compagnie de l' Est operating company, it received its present name in 1854.
