Garoua

Province

Garoua ( German: Garua ) with 287 586 inhabitants, the third largest city in Cameroon.

Situated at the Benue capital of the North Province is a center of inland navigation and trading center for the commerce of agriculturally- dominated northern Cameroon. In addition, Garoua has an international airport and textile industries.

History

Garoua built in the first half of the 19th century as a fortified settlement of Fulbeeroberer against the encroachments of the original residents of the Benue Valley native Bata and Fali companies. As such, it was the seat of a dependent Amir Fombina in Yoola Fulbe Subamirats under the regency of Ardo. The residence is however under Ardo Bakari Mayha (1851-1863) moved to the healthier and strategically located Laynde ( Leinde ) and only returned in 1870 to Garoua back. Laynde remained a secondary residence and was still at the beginning of the German occupation of the country, the more important village.

The first intensive relations with a European power existed in the form of a trading branch of the British Royal Niger Company, which maintained from 1889 to 1892 a Hulk on the Benue at Garoua. In October 1893, the German explorer of Edgar Uechtritz and Siegfried Passarge visited the city.

1901 was defeated in the battles between the German colonial power and the recently dethroned by the British Amir Fombina the reigning Ardo time Dayfourou ( 1897-1901 ) of the German Protection Force and was a cooperating successor ( Ardo Buuba Dewa, 1901-1921 ) replaced. Because of its commercially strategic location at the end point of the navigability of the Benue was Garoua (German: Garua ) intended for the administrative seat of Residentur Adamawa and location of a company of the protection force. Under German rule began a massive growth of the city, which soon outstripped other historical places of Central Fulbe as Maroua, Ray, Ngaoundéré, Banyo or Tibati and developed the regional center for the northern part of Cameroon.

By February 1902, the construction of a military station was completed, which was expanded in later years. 1905/ 06 up to eight meters high, flanked by two towers mounting wall with loopholes was built. Redoubts and a Umfassungsgraben supplemented the military installations. The core area of the station area eventually covered an area of about 2000 m². In World War Garoua was repeatedly the target of British attacks from the neighboring colony of Nigeria.
