Mountains of the Garraf

Garraf is a low mountain range and is ever half in the same Comarqua Garraf and in the Comarqua Baix Llobregat in Catalonia.

Location

The mountains of the Garraf extend over a length of 26.5 km and cover an area of 9967 hectares. The solid in the form of a triangle bordered to the east by the valley of the Llobregat, the north and west to the fertile plains of the Penedès and on the south by the Mediterranean Sea. It is part of the Catalan coastal range.

Traffic

For centuries hindered the mountains as a natural barrier to trade on land routes between Barcelona and the Comarqua Garraf. It was not until the construction of the railway route Barcelona - Sitges ( 1888) and the construction of a toll motorway (1994 ), both with long tunnels, facilitating passenger and goods traffic.

Geology

The karstic massif with its rolling hills and deep valleys eroded consists of calcareous rocky outcroppings. Over the millennia, many caves have formed. The highest elevations are the Morella ( 594 m) and the Rascler (572 m). From the Mediterranean coast, it forms a steep coast and the bays.

Fauna and Flora

In the mountains of the Garraf there are two nature parks. The criss-crossed with trails Garraf Natural Park with 123.8 km ² and the smaller natural park Olérdola. The fauna and flora have adapted to this arid landscape, without surface water. Different species of birds including the Bonelli's eagle and numerous reptiles such as turtles and lizards are native here. The low vegetation with agaves, cacti, and dwarf palms is always pervaded by pine forests. Next in the interior of the mountains you will find oaks and pines.
