Garrett P. Serviss

Garrett Putnam Serviss ( born March 24, 1851 in Sharon Springs, New York, † 1929) was an American journalist and author. He wrote non-fiction books on astronomical topics and science fiction stories.

Life and work

Serviss was born in 1851 in Sharon Springs, New York. From 1868-1872 he studied natural sciences at Cornell University. He then attended Columbia College Law School. However, he never worked as a lawyer but in 1876 the editor of the New York Sun, where he popularized scientific topics in numerous articles. From 1892 he devoted himself as a lecturer and author throughout this task.

His first book "Astronomy with an Opera Glass" appeared 1888th Although most of his books deal with questions of astronomy, he also wrote an introduction to the theory of relativity and a guide about the " art of public speaking ." In terms of its emissions of non-fiction books and magazine articles in the future literature occupies only a small part of his work. Known are five novels and a short story. Much like HG Wells, Jules Verne or Kurd Laßwitz put Serviss in his fictional tales great importance to the teaching of science contexts.
