Gartocharn

Gartocharn (from Gaelic Gart a ' Chairn ) is a village in the Scottish unitary authority in West Dunbartonshire. It is about twelve kilometers north of Dumbarton near the south shore of Loch Lomond at the southern end of Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. In 1971 the town reported 250 residents.

Traffic

The A811 runs directly through Gartocharn. It combines Balloch in the west with Stirling and includes the village on to the road network. A connection to the rail network does not exist.

Ross Priory

Since the 14th century the Clan Buchanan ruled the lands. In 1695 the latter founded one of his family seats at the site of the present mansion Ross Priory. This is from a design by the architect James Gillespie Graham, was built 1810-1816. 1817 spent the writer Walter Scott some time in the mansion, where he also wrote most of his novel Rob Roy. Since 1971, the building belongs to the University of Strathclyde.
