Gary Numan

Gary Numan (actually: Gary Anthony James Webb, born March 8, 1958 in Hammersmith, London ) is a British musician and pioneer of electropop.

Life

Gary Webb's father was a bus driver at British Airways. That's why Gary wanted to be a pilot, but this career choice could not be fulfilled due to lack of school requirements early. Webb tried his hand at several other professions. At 15 he began to write songs and also played in several bands. Together with his uncle Jess Lidyard and Paul Gardiner, he founded the band Tubeway Army. He first appeared under the pseudonym of Valerian. His nickname Numan he accepted because of an advertisement in the Yellow Pages.

In 2003 he married Gemma O'Neill. Today he lives with her and shared three children in East Sussex. His family and his private life he holds largely out of the public eye. Numan admits to have a mild form of Asperger's syndrome.

Career

Numan's career began in the late 1970s, when he founded the New Wave band Tubeway Army, with the Are ' Friends' Electric? 1979 a worldwide hit landed. In the same year was his third album already Replicas for four weeks number 1 in the UK charts, another No. 1 hit single followed with Cars. The two successor albums were on the success (now under the name of Gary Numan ), The Pleasure Principle (1979) and teleconsultation (1980 ) build, which also placed again at # 1 on the British charts. Until the mid- 1980s very successful especially in England, was a long artistic depth from which Numan was not until 1994 that free again. The album Sacrifice introduces gloomy, claustrophobic soundscapes a completely new beginning dar.

Numan is called by many bands and musicians as a model, including Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters ), Trent Reznor ( Nine Inch Nails ), Billy Corgan ( The Smashing Pumpkins ) or The Prodigy. Especially in the New Wave and Gothic scene he counted many fans and followers. 1998 the crossover band Fear Factory a reinterpretation of his classic cars, at the Gary Numan appeared as a second vocalist. In 2002, the British girl group Sugababes a hit with an inspired mash-ups blend of Adina Howard's Freak Like Me ( lyrics, melody ) and Tubeway Armys Are ' Friends' Electric? ( Instrumentalhook ).
