Gary Willis

Gary Willis ( born March 28, 1957 in Longview, Texas) is an American electric bass player, composer, Transkripteur and bass teacher (including Musicians Institute, Los Angeles), who was known by the co-founded by his band Tribal Tech.

Life and work

He worked with musicians such as Wayne Shorter, Jean -Luc Ponty, Dennis Chambers, and Allan Holdsworth and released several solo albums.

Since his father was a pianist and musical director of the gospel choir of a Christian community, Gary grew up in his early childhood to music. At age 13, he began with the bass playing and also tried his short time on the trombone. Particularly influential for his game is his three-finger technique in which three ( instead of two) fingers of the right hand is plucked. This makes it possible to play with little effort and movement very quickly and evenly and is despite the high learning effort to be extremely efficient. Occasionally sets Willis additional thumb for plucking. He is an endorser for the Japanese instrument manufacturer Ibanez and is in the jazz-rock or fusion scene as exceptional players.
