Gaspar Correia

Gaspar Correia (* 1492, † 1563) was a Portuguese historian and author of the Chronicle Lendas da India.

Life

Little is known about the life of Gaspar Correia. 1506 he appeared as Moço de câmara in the service of King Manuel I.. Portugal in 1512, he left direction Portuguese India, where he was Escrivao the Viceroy Afonso de Albuquerque. In 1529 he returned for a short time to Portugal, then went back to India, where he probably died in Goa in 1563.

Correia's fame rests on his main work Lendas Indias ( Legends / Read value from India). In this chronicle, he described the history of the Portuguese in India by Vasco da Gama expedition in 1497 until 1550. Manuscript came in 1582 from Goa to Portugal and remained in private hands. It was not until 1858-1886 published by the Academia Real the Sciencias in Lisbon. The, also designed by Correia Chronicle of Portuguese kings ( Chronicas dos Reys de Portugal) was largely ignored until now.
