Gataga River

BW

The Gataga River is a right tributary of the Kechika River in the north of the Canadian province of British Columbia.

The Gataga River rises south of the Battle of Britain in the Muskwa Ranges Range, a mountain range in the far north of the Rocky Mountains. The river initially flows westward through the mountains. After about 50 km of the South River meets Gataga from the left on the river. The now Gataga River turns northwest and flows for 100km in a broad mountain valley to its mouth in the Kechika River. Shortly before his mouth of the River Gataga reached the Rocky Mountain Trench, in which the Kechika River runs.

The name " Gataga " comes from the language of Sikanni, meaning " white water ", which refers to the melting water from the glacier- source region, which gives the river a light gray color.

The section of the river below the confluence of the South Gataga River is located within the Dune Za Keyih Provincial Park and Protected Area. On this stretch of river canoe tours are offered.
