The creek originates in Königsheide at an altitude of 386 m above sea level. NN. From here it flows in a predominantly west-north- westerly direction through the villages Obergaul, Nagelsgaul, Dohrgaul, Friedrich Thal, nail Büchel and Niedergaul into Wipperfuerth left side to 268 m above sea level. NN of the Wupper zuzufließen. On its 8.4 km long road of Gaulbach overcomes a difference in altitude of 117 m, corresponding to an average bed slope of 13.9 ‰.

On the initiative of Wupperverbandes the Gaulbach was in the city of Wipperfuerth of 1999 to the spring of 2000 freed as part of the restoration and improvement of water quality structure of its stream bed fortified with concrete wall sheets and planted in addition with alder, ash and maples.

On Gaulbach mills were operated in earlier times, including the Mühle near nail Büchel.
