GCE Advanced Level

The Advanced Level (General Certificate of Education Advanced Level ), usually abbreviated as A-level, is adjacent to the International Baccalaureate (IB ) is the highest end of the school system in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. In Scotland, it corresponds to the Advanced Higher Grade. The 1951 introduced A-levels can be stored in various subjects. Many universities expect certain minimum grades of A-levels.

Since the introduction of Curriculum 2000 in 2001, an existing six modules course must be taken to obtain a A-levels in the course of two years. The first three modules are evaluated after the first year and constitute a separate financial statements as an AS -level, which are rated A2 -level three modules of the second year. The A-level is obtained when you have completed an AS and an A2 level in the same subject. It is possible to repeat the second year the courses to AS modules when the test results in the first year did not meet the expectations of the student. See main article of the English General Certificate of Education ( GCE) English students take in the last two school years usually three to four subjects that can be chosen freely (there is no compulsion as in Germany, to occupy a foreign language or a natural science ). The completion of these subjects ( A- Levels) enabled then generally only for the study of certain subjects.

The assessment does not take place as in Germany with the score 1-6 ( 1 being the best rating ), but from A to E. In this case, an A will be awarded if at least 80 % of the maximum points are reached. It still exists with an E, for which you have to reach 40%. The worst score is unclassified. A small table to illustrate:

From the tests in 2010, there is also an A *, for which 90 % are required. The introduction of this " Super Note" was considered necessary because in recent years many A were obtained, which made it difficult to differentiate between top candidates. This note will only be awarded at A2 and AS for the modules do not apply.

Also, the IB is now being offered at more and more schools in the UK and serves as a model for a reformed education, which aims at replacing because of their one-sidedness the criticized A-Levels.
