O Gebo ea Sombra (French title: Gebo et l' ombre, in German: Gebo and the Shadow ) is a Portuguese- French film director Manoel de Oliveira of Portugal from 2012.

Action

End of the 19th century, the honest, frail become accountants Gebo his work is increasingly looking for with effort. Production

Manoel de Oliveira ( b. 1908 ) filmed the 1923 by Raul Brandão ( 1867-1930 ) written, same Vierakter here. Oliveira sees the issue of poverty and its effect on people treated, and recognizes it as a particularly topical reference.

The film was entirely shot in a film studio in Paris, at the express request of the director. It was filmed in 2011 and had a budget of 1.6 million euros, financed among others from the Portuguese film promotion institute ICA and the French CNC.

Reception

The atmospheric, quiet film away only slightly from the theatrical presentation. So he rarely plays outside of the most dimly lit living room of the family. The critics praised the consistently impressive performance of sovereign actors who stand strong in the foreground here, and its expression as the viewer comes closer than usual. However, it was sometimes noted that in this approach, the advantages of the cinema opposite the theater usage is low. Especially in the French press, the plant received some very high scores, rated by some as well as a little entertaining.

The film was shown at various international film festivals, including at the International Film Festival in Venice in 2012, where he was shown out of competition. In Portugal, he was nominated for both Best Film at the Film Festival of the domestic film, the Caminhos do Cinema Português, as well as the Globo de Ouro prices for the category.

2013 appeared the film on DVD in France ( at Epicentre Films), as well as in Portugal, here in the original French with subtitles in Portuguese ( at ZON Audiovisuais, a subsidiary of ZON Multimédia ).
