Gebrinius

Gebrinius ( " goat " [? ] ) Was a god who was worshiped in Roman times Bonn. After the interpretatio romana he is equated with Mercury. Both a perfect Celtic as well as a Germanic interpretation of the name can not be made because of the uncertain etymology.

Tradition

Under the minster in Bonn ( Bonna, a Roman province Germania superior) ten Roman times consecration stones were found after 1920 during archaeological investigations that have been dedicated to the Mercurius Gebrinius.

From the same sanctuary also consecration stones to the Germanic Aufaniae come Matronae with which Gebrinius is seen in close connection.

Interpretation

Because on some stones consecration of a ram is mapped, the name will be provided to Gallo Gabros " Aries ". This interpretation is favored by modern research.

Siegfried Good Brunner drew contrast Norse gifr " fiend " added, pointing the name as * Gebriniaz » Lord of the Fiends " and saw him as less than satisfactory Odin as the leader of the Wild Hunt.
