Geevarghese Mar Osthathios

Geevarghese Mar Osthathios ( born December 9, 1918 in Mavelikkara, Alappuzha District, Kerala, India, † February 16, 2012 in Pathanamthitta, Pathanamthitta district, Kerala ) was an Indian author and clergyman of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, among others, from 1975 until 2007 was Metropolitan of the Diocese Niranam.

Life

Mar Osthathios studied post-school theology at the Leonard Theological College, Jabalpur and then completed a postgraduate course at Drew University in the U.S., which he finished with a Master of Arts (MA). In addition, he completed further studies at Union Seminary in Bangalore. On 9 August 1947, he received the appointment as Vice - deacon ( Korooyo ) by Metropolitan eyes Mar Timotheos and then on May 10, 1956, the ordination to the priesthood. On 2 October 1974 saw his appointment as Metropolitan and the Ramban at St. Mary Cathedral in Puthencavu.

Having carried out the consecration as bishop on 16 February 1975 he was appointed shortly thereafter on April 1, 1975 as the successor of Thoma Mar Dionysius Metropolitan of the Diocese Niranam. In this role he was also a member of the Commission for ordinations and faith of the World Council of Churches, as well as a lecturer at the Orthodox Theological Seminary in Kottayam. In addition, he was president of the Mission Office of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and director of the St Paul's Mission Training Centre in Mavelikkara.

During his last until 2007 working as a Metropolitan he founded numerous benevolent societies such as the Marriage Assistance Foundation, the Sick Aid Foundation, the Save A Heart Foundation, the House Building Aid Fund, the Mission Training Centre, MGD Ashram Balabhavan Karunagiri, St Paul's Ashram Puthuppady, the Harippad Mission Centre and the St Gregorios Yacharam Balagram.

On January 3, 2007, he Yuhanon Mar Chrysostom succeeded as Metropolitan of the Diocese Niranam.
